The era of piracy in the Caribbean began in the 16th century and died out in the 1830s after the navies of the nations of Western Europe and North America with colonies in the Caribbean began combating pirates. Piracy flourished in the Caribbean because of the existence of pirate seaports such as Port Royal in Jamaica, Tortuga, and Nassau in the Bahamas. However, pirates were always on the lookout for remote and deserted islands to hide their plunder. Pirate’s Cove is an ideal location for escaping the authorities. Far removed from the busy shipping lanes a pirate can bury treasure, make repairs, and restock supplies.
