Description

Prismacolor Colored Pencils - Approx: 10 hrs.

This picture was very enjoyable to draw. It is a remake of a drawing I did back in the 1990's (see [link]. It is a good comparison on how my drawing style has changed and evolved over the years. I have discovered my favorite color - black! It is amazing how dynamic a drawing can become if you are not afraid to use it.

Story behind the art: Autumn is a magical season. The heat of summer is replaced with cool days and cold nights. Trees that were thick with green leaves transform into a kaleidoscope of browns, reds, oranges, and yellows. The roar of the river sounds like a distant thunderstorm. Its spray making the rocks wet and slippery. The old grist mill has been abandoned for nearly four decades. Its original color undeterminable. The peeling paint having long ago lost its color. The weathered covered bridge is dilapidated and in desperate need of repairs. Though the place is abandoned and in disrepair it holds an air of mystery and romance. Memories, like ghosts, can be easily imagined. Look for the lovers strolling hand in hand over the bridge and families picnic along the river bank. Young boys and old men with pant legs rolled up and cane pole in hand sit on rocks fishing. A black retriever frolics in the tall grass looking for rabbits and squirrels. The wife of the miller stands in the doorway and waves to visitors…long ago but not forgotten.

You are absolutely right about black.  I draw only using graphite pencil and it took me a long time to get the confidence to go in hard with very soft pencils to get deep blacks in my drawings. Since doing so my pictures have had greater depth.
